Nikolaienko — Love-Fidelity or Hiss Goodbye
Muscut 34 (C-40, CASS/DL)

BUY
Moiré patterns are peculiar optical effects that occur when similar sets of lines or patterns are superposed onto each other. The same process is behind the wavy rainbow patterns that appear in photos sometimes. Relatedly, moiré is a term applied in textiles to describe rippled finishes. The word originates in the French for “watered”. The suggestion that something fixed is starting to behave like a liquid. - The Quietus

Nikolaienko — Meta
Muscut 33 (C-40, VINYL/CASS/DL)

BUY
Meta is a syllabic abbreviation of two words: "Metallophone" and "Tape."
Metallophone and tape music by Nikolaienko.

"It’s an album where I’ve limited myself to using only two instruments—a metallophone and a four-track tape recorder. Explorations of the metallophone and tape sounds are deconstructed and reintegrated into tracks with cassette loops. This release is part of this year’s Muscut label series, dedicated not to electronic but to electro-acoustic music focusing on analog recording and production." Taken from the Shape platform interview (March 2024)

Nikolaienko — Nostalgia Por Mesozóica
Muscut 16/16LP/16C (Vinyl/Cassette/DL)

BUY
On the label founder’s upcoming record, due out in May, he extends his archaeological obsession to the natural history museum. Nostalgia por Mesozócia is framed as an imaginary soundtrack for fossil exhibitions and dinosaur dioramas. Its nostalgia is many-layered: Analog chirps and liquid gurgles summon images of 200-million-year-old rainforests, while wheezing organs and clanking marimbas evoke the easy-listening exotica made popular in the ’50s by artists like Arthur Lyman. Mingling kitsch with surrealism, it makes for a fanciful and engrossing trip into the past. — Pitchfork
Format: 12” LP (300), Cas (50), DL

Nikolaienko — The Sounds of Pseudoscience
Muscut 3 (Vinyl/Cassette/DL)

BUY
"Four years in the making, Nikolaienko’s retrogarde take on mid-20th century tape music is a loping, whirling fuzzy felt oscillator odyssey. If Louis and Bebe Barron had been asked to create electronic tonalities for a Czech animation based on EM Forster’s The Machine Stops, the results may have turned out like this. Only, for all its nods to Parmegiani and the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, one can’t quite see this album coming out in 1956 – or even 1976. Something about the slightly off kilter rhythms, the loose feel and wheezing sound effects make this very much a post-Dilla take on Raymond Scott and his successors." — The Wire
